Former Savannah Mayor Otis Johnson said Thursday a two-day program in August will celebrate 1963 as a “watershed year” in the civil rights movement in Savannah and nationwide.

Johnson, standing with members of the Committee to Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Desegregation in Savannah, announced events on Aug. 24 and 25 to drive home the message.

“We believe the story of the civil rights movement in 1963 has not been adequately told,” Johnson said during a press conference at the First African Baptist Church on Franklin Square.
