A special-called meeting of the Chatham County Board of Elections has been scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday to discuss putting a proposed sales tax on the ballot in November.

The board of five appointed members will discuss the scheduling of the county’s special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST) referendum, which the county commission wants to put to a vote on Nov. 5.

Officials provided no other details.

On Friday, the county commission voted swiftly and with no discussion to ratify the county’s intergovernmental agreement with the city of Savannah to decide how revenues would be collected over the six-year collection period if voters approve the sales tax.

Chairman Al Scott said following the meeting that county and city attorneys had been working with elections board Chairman Joseph Steffen to resolve his concern about the passage of a resolution last August before the agreement was approved.

However, he said the SPLOST vote would go on in spite of the week-long clash between the two agencies. The commission has no plans to take a re-vote on the resolution, he said.

“We don’t have a need to, and legally it would be inappropriate,” Scott said.
