HUTCHINSON ISLAND, GA – $737-million dollars. That’s how much more money Southern Company says they now need to complete the first nuclear plant building project in 30 years.
The question is, who will pay for it?
As of now, the project is now going to cost $6.86 billion.
Southern Company, who owns 46% of the reactors, blames licensing delays and production problems for the cost overruns.
While in the past Governor Nathan Deal has blamed environmental groups’ lawsuits against the Vogtle project for the ever rising price tag.
When News 3 asked the Governor who should pay that whopping $737 million, the public or Georgia power, he passed the buck. Governor Deal says the decision is in the hands of the public service commission, but he did admit the debate is a viable one.
“There are certainly points to be made on the side of those who say the company should absorb more of the cost and not pass it on to rate payers. Certainly if that could be done that would be a good solution,” said Governor Nathan Deal. “But I think we can’t lose sight of the fact that those two nuclear reactors will be the first new nuclear reactors in the United States in several decades and its in my opinion a necessary impact of keeping the state of Georgia with adequate power resources.”
