Commissioners-elect of the new Macon-Bibb County government are getting ready for work. They’re not yet sworn into office and can’t make any decisions for a government that doesn’t exist yet, but they’re starting to get oriented on how the new government is supposed to work and what’s already been recommended.

Macon Mayor and Macon-Bibb County Mayor-elect Robert Reichert asked for the meetings.

“This will provide time for people to ask questions, hear from the public and be ready to make decisions on the first day of the new government,” Reichert said in a statement. “This is an historic moment, and we need to seize on every chance to move the process forward.”

The first meeting was held Friday. All meetings are scheduled to be two hours long and will be held in the Middle Georgia Regional Commission offices, at 175 Emery Highway. They will be open to the public and broadcast live at www.maconbibb.tv online.

Those meetings include 2 p.m. Nov. 15; 9 a.m. Nov. 21; 9 a.m. Dec. 4; 9 a.m. Dec. 5; 2 p.m. Dec. 6; 10 a.m. Dec. 11; 10 a.m. Dec. 12; 10 a.m. Dec. 13; and 9 a.m. Dec. 18.

Staton to host higher education meeting

State Sen. Cecil Staton, R-Macon, will hold a joint meeting of the Senate Appropriations Committee on Higher Education with the House and Senate Appropriations subcommittees of Community Health from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday in the Mercer Medical School auditorium.

The meeting will include presentations on medical education by Georgia Regents University, Mercer University, Morehouse University, Philadelphia Osteopathic School, and Emory University.

The auditorium’s address is 1550 College St., Macon.
