In the twilight of his Milledgeville City Council term, Phillip Joiner was arrested for driving under the influence Monday afternoon.
Joiner was also cited for an expired tag, possession of open container and failure to maintain lane by the Georgia State Patrol.
At approximately 2:33 p.m. Monday, a GSP trooper traveling north on North Jefferson Street nearing its intersection with Walton Street noticed Joiner’s Jeep Cherokee travel off the asphalt and onto the concrete portion of the roadway edge near the curb, according to the report.
Joiner told the trooper he was on his way to change clothes to attend a City Council meeting.
Joiner was placed under arrest for DUI. He was transported to the Baldwin County Jail for processing Monday evening and later released.
Milledgeville City Council and Mayor Richard Bentley requested earlier this month that Joiner, whose term representing District 4 expires Dec. 31, resign from office effectively immediately. Council announced the decision in regards to findings from a city ethics complaint filed against Joiner.
Joiner said then resigning wasn’t in his plans and that he would complete his term. Joiner did not seek re-election for a second term.
