Gov. Deal suspends DeKalb CEO Ellis – Atlanta Business Chronicle

Gov. Nathan Deal Tuesday suspended indicted DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis, upholding the recommendation of a three-member review panel.

“The allegations against Burrell Ellis directly relate to and adversely affect his ability to carry out his duties,” the governor said during a late-afternoon news conference. “The responsibility to suspend and replace elected officials is one that I do not relish, but one I will not shy away from.”

A grand jury indicted Ellis last month on 15 counts, including 14 felonies, accusing him of conspiracy, attempted extortion and theft for shaking down companies that did business with the county for campaign contributions.

Deal appointed Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens, Rockdale County CEO Richard Oden and Jeffrey Turner, chairman of the Clayton County Commission, to review the charges against Ellis.

After hearing the case on Monday, the panel recommended that he be suspended until his term ends or the case against him is adjudicated.
