RN-T.com – Davis Ruling on Voting Rights Act violations will not affect Rome

A federal court ruling on Voting Rights Act violations in Fayette County will not put Rome’s own election methods in jeopardy, according to City Attorney Andy Davis.

The NAACP sued Fay­ette, arguing that its at-large voting practices virtually guaranteed that no black candidates would ever be elected to the board of commissioners or the board of education.

A U.S. District Court judge recently ordered the county to establish an alternative to the current method. Fayette County Commissioners voted unanimously last week to appeal.

Davis, a partner at Brin­son, Askew, Berry, Seigler, Richardson & Davis, LLP, said past rulings on challenges to the City of Rome’s at-large election method will ensure a ripple effect won’t be felt here.

“Rome has dealt with this issue several times before and the outcome has been favorable to the city each time,” Davis said.
