Georgia’s unemployment rate ticked up to 8.3 percent in May, the state Department of Labor reported Thursday.
That’s one-tenth of a percentage point higher from the 8.2 percent in April. However, the rate is eight-tenths of a percentage point lower from 9.1 percent in May last year.
State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler says the increase comes from more people entering the workforce.
“Even though our rate did go up just slightly, one tenth of a point, we still had a lot of good news. We saw the business sector continue to hire,” Butler said. “And probably even more importantly for Georgia’s economy, we saw construction add 2500 jobs.”
The report shows Georgia added 15,800 jobs in May.
The jobs growth means recovery is holding steady, said Rajeev Dhawan, director of the Economic Forecasting Center at Georgia State University.
