Adoptable Georgia Dogs for April 2, 2013

Adopt A Golden Atlanta is the finest, most professional rescue I’ve ever seen; they set the Gold standard for dog rescue, and they need your help. They have taken in two Golden Retrievers who need foster homes, and are expecting up to eight more dogs this week for whom they have no fosters.

Duke (left) is a big, happy fellow of 114 pounds who is 7 years old and needs a foster or adoptive home. Well, they say I should lose about 20 of those pounds but what else was there to do except eat and sleep when I lived on a porch? My family had allergies and I couldn’t live inside with them. Of course living outside all the time and having no heartworm protection- you guessed it-I have heartworms. I needed some medicine to kills those heartworms and make me all better but I didn’t bring money with me. I had to pay my doctor $500 and that’s alot. After I get better from the heartworms, AGA is going to find me a home where I can live inside, have my own bed and my own toys and people to tell me they love me. AGA said I could even pick my own family. That is the dream that will help me get better and even if I have to wait a bit for that it’s OK to ask about me now. Your friend, Duke

Amy (right) is a 7 year old female who loves children, gets along with other dogs, but does not like cats. Amy needs an active family, and since she loves to chase tennis balls, Amy needs a fenced yard. She is housebroken, and does not like being crated. She has been boarding at the vet for over a week, and we would love for Amy to be with a caring foster family.

These dogs also illustrate how rescue organizations often face large vet bills from a dog who appears healthy but may have heartworms or other veterinary issues.

Dixie Dog Rescue is currently facing thousands of dollars in vet bills incurred on behalf of dogs they have saved. One of the problems rescues face is that they often end up saving healthy-looking dogs who turn out to need more extensive care than anticipated. In one recent case, Dixie Dog Rescue saved a beautiful young yellow lab who had two broken legs and was left on the roadside to die. [That dog is doing very well in her recovery – click here to see.]
