Fulton County Spending $4.8M to Secure Jail | WABE 90.1 FM

After years of delay, the Fulton County Commission has finally approved money to install new cell locks at the county jail.

The new lock system for the more than 1200 cells at the Rice Street facility will cost $4.8 million. The system will be automated and have a master control area. Commission Chairman John Eaves says installation work will start in June but is not expected to be complete until September.

“It’s somewhat comprehensive and sophisticated, and so for the installation to be done right will certainly take time,” says Eaves.

Last year alone, the jail reported 45 unauthorized exits from cells which led to two fights, seven assaults, and one sexual assault.
