I get a lot of interesting replies to the morning news email, and I’m going to start publishing some of them. They’ll be corrected for grammar and spelling unless it’s funnier to leave it as is.
Apparently some folks in DC think that Congressman Paul Broun isn’t doing himself any favors in his Senate bid by continuing to stake out his territory on the far right.
Rep. Paul Broun wants to be a senator, but the Georgia Republican’s far-right legislative record might make it difficult for him to prevail in a statewide race.
Particularly damaging for Broun, who is running in 2014 for a seat left open by Republican Saxby Chambliss’ retirement, could be his penchant for pushing amendments that are viewed as extreme, even by many in his own party.
The most recent example came this past week, when Broun offered an amendment to zero out the budget for the Transportation Security Administration at a time when Americans are concerned about unemployment numbers and airport security under the duress of the sequester. The proposal was offered during floor debate on a bill to fund Homeland Security operations for fiscal 2014.
“Congress intended for TSA to be an efficient, cutting-edge, intelligence-based agency responsible for protecting our airports … but today it has grown into one of the largest bureaucracies in the federal government,” Broun said on the House floor. He explained that the amendment would force “Congress and the Department of Homeland Security to start from scratch on a leaner, more effective … and more productive system for protecting our U.S. citizens.”
And while this aggressive approach to fiscal conservatism makes him a favorite among libertarian and tea-party-minded voters — former Republican Rep. Ron Paul of Texas recently endorsed Broun — GOP operatives and strategists predict that it will ultimately cost him support with the more mainstream Republican base that makes up the Peach State’s electorate.
A veteran Republican operative in Washington, D.C., said he did not think “the TSA [amendment] is going to matter more than any other of his crazy votes,” adding that his bona fides “might marginally help him in a primary [but are] clearly not going to help him in the general.”
A Georgia Republican strategist, however, said that latest targeting of the TSA could very well come back to haunt Broun.
“All the things that he continues to do is going to be fodder against him,” the strategist said. “I think the [TSA amendment] will absolutely come up. … It feeds into the idea that he is this extreme guy who kind of deals with things in a sledgehammer approach instead of understanding the real policy issues that are at play.”
Meanwhile, DSCC national press secretary Justin Barasky insists that all the GOP candidates currently in the running give Democrats an upper hand.

If we need to get rid of the TSA and start over, so be it; you can’t fix a leak in the dyke, one pebble at a time. In my opinion, we need to throw out the whole administration and start over!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

True conservative candidates like Paul Broun are not the problem. One could easily argue that the voters are the problem. Voters settling for someone that looks good, sounds nice, make a bunch of promises and meets with the approval of the media. Never asking the hard questions, who is this candidate, what has he stood for and what does he stand for now. Ask yourself, how many times have you and others said, I want a candidate that will not say one thing while campaigning and do another once elected. Then, when given a clear choice, the voter listens to the liberal media, the pundits and pseudo-conservatives who’s job it is to convince just enough people to vote for the “feel good candidate”, the one who can tickle the voters ears, to go with the “safe” candidate. Look where that has gotten us. The voters ask for candidates with backbone and conviction, yet when it comes time to cast their ballot they are the ones who lack backbone and conviction of principle.
Paul Broun is the only candidate for the U.S. Senate that absolutely will not morpf into another Saxby. Paul Broun is the only one elected to office and has done what he said he would do. His stated principles for governing are the solution to our problems and needed more now than at any time in the history of our nation. We don’t have time to experiment with someone who we “hope” will do what they say they will do. Paul Broun has proven he will stand on principle even if he has to stand alone. He has stated those simple principles and he has upheld his promises.
I am amazed at how voters let the liberal media, moderates and the so called conservatives that want to re-define conservatism because they can’t stomach the truth to tell them how to vote. They want you to believe that you must agree with Paul Broun 100% on every issue, but it’s ok to support other candidates that you may not agree with all the time.
We need people in elected offices who are committed to governing on proven principles, people who will stand if they have to stand alone. That candidate for the U.S. Senate from Georgia is Congressman Paul Broun.
