Despite Drenching Spring, Peaches Look Good – Growing Georgia

Peach-growing country took a drenching this spring, but the crop is the best in several years, according to one grower.

Macon, Ga., recorded its wettest June ever, at 12.25 inches, according to State Climatologist Pam Knox. (The old record of 9.91 inches was set in 1923.)

Standing in an orchard about 30 miles south of there, Mark Sanchez, the CEO of peach and pecan producer Lane Southern Orchards, could see a few fruits busted open by moisture over the past 24 hours.

But overall, the rain hasn’t done nearly the damage it might.

“We have had a tremendous amount of rain, and sometimes that can cause a problem with fruits and vegetables, but not this year,” Sanchez said.

“This is easily the best crop we’ve seen in the past five to six years,” agreed Duke Lane III, VP of sales for the orchards.
