County school system receives $3.9M grant – Times-Georgian: News

Carroll County Schools, in a partnership with a state leadership institute, received a $3.9 million federal grant this week.

From the U.S. Department of Education’s School Leadership Program, the $3.9 million will be spread over five years and will be used in tandem with the Georgia Leadership Institute for School Improvement (GLISI) to recruit, train and mentor high school principals and assistant principals.

Carroll County Schools Superintendent Scott Cowart said the grant is a “very powerful opportunity” that will ensure the system will retain its current leaders and, should a vacancy arise, will maintain a deep bench of effective school leaders.

“We are hoping this will create a good pipeline of leadership in leading our system forward,” Cowart said. “With budget cuts in recent years, one of the areas that has suffered in our — and many other — districts is professional development. So we’re hoping this will help us with that very important piece of educating our students.”

The grant is intended to support four key activities designed to accelerate improved outcomes for Carroll County high school students: 1) rigorous selection and evaluation of principals, assistant principals and teachers leaders; 2) training and coaching for leaders; 3) technical assistance; and 4) incentive compensation for school leaders.

The winning proposal, “High Calling: Coaching and Learning for Leaders in Carroll County High Schools,” was one of only 20 proposals selected by the highly competitive nationwide program, according to a release.
