The Atlanta Braves’ plan to build a $672 million stadium in Cobb County got some pushback Tuesday from taxpayers worried about having to foot a major portion of the bill.
“We see this as an entertainment venture by a private-sector company,” said Lance Lamberton, founder and chairman of the Cobb County Taxpayers Association. “They shouldn’t be going to the taxpayer.”
Lamberton said the group might be able to support a stadium built with revenues from the local hotel/motel tax and from taxes generated by the businesses that spring up in the Cumberland/Galleria area because of the 42,000-seat stadium.
But with the public investment portion of the pending deal between the Braves and Cobb County pegged at upwards of $450 million, those potential sources of revenue might not be enough.
‘”The devil is in the details,” Lamberton said. “We don’t know exactly what the figure is.”
Echoing Lamberton’s concern about taxes, Cobb County Republican Chairman Joe Dendy posted a statement on Twitter Tuesday endorsing the stadium as a “real shot in the arm” for the county’s economy, but only if the project doesn’t come with a tax increase.
