GAINESVILLE — By Monday, a new destinaton will be available on Lake Lanier for fans of all kinds of outdoor activities.
The Don Carter State Park is scheduled to open then, and is named in honor of the longest serving member of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources board. Carter served for 29 years. It’s located at 5000 N. Browning Bridge Road in Gainesville. A ranger-led half-mile hike is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Monday for the first 30 guests. A snake program is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to learn about cold-blooded creatures native to Georgia. And beach games are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
The park is 1,316 acres and situated on the north end of the reservoir. Among the features are new boat ramps, a fish-cleaning station and a 1.5-mile paved trail. A swimming beach area also features a sloped lawn and bath house. For overnight campers, hot showers can accomodate RV campers, while another area is reserved for tents and hammocks.
A state Department of Natural Resources press release said the park will open on a first-come, first-serve basis, but will soon accept reservations for camp sites. There are eight cabins that have two bedrooms each and include porches with rocking chairs and fully-equipped kitchens. The cabins are scheduled to open later this summer.
