The Bibb County Democratic Party announced this week its fifth chairman since 2011.
After party Chairman Fred Swann resigned from the party’s executive committee earlier this week, the party chose Vice Chairwoman Sandy Powell to replace him. Swann had served as chairman since January.
In a message posted on the party’s Facebook page, Swann gave no reason why he stepped down, but he said the move was effective immediately.
Attempts to reach Swann and Powell for comment Wednesday were unsuccessful.
The party has been embroiled in controversy, most recently when one of its two appointees to the Bibb County Board of Elections, Steve Allen, voted last month in favor of calling for a Sept. 17 nonpartisan special election for the consolidated Macon-Bibb County government that begins next year.
