WASHINGTON He may call him a “friend” in Washington, but back home in Nevada, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is predicting the downfall of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.
Reid said the Kentuckian would lose his re-election bid in 2014 and the Democrats would retain their hold on the Senate.
“They have to pick up six seats,” Reid said of the Republicans. “I wasn’t a genius with math but I know those numbers are hard to come by.”
“We have competitive seats. In Kentucky — we are ahead in the polls in Kentucky,” Reid said on Las Vegas station KNPR’s “State of Nevada” program.
“We are ahead in the polls in Georgia — Michelle Nunn, Sam Nunn’s daughter, is ahead of everybody. Alison Grimes is ahead of the Republican leader, and so that’s two we’re going to pick up and we’re doing fine around the country,” Reid said.
Brad Dayspring, spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, responded that Reid also predicted in 2012 his party would take Senate seats in Nevada and Arizona “and went 0-2.”
“Every dollar Democrats choose to spend chasing a flight of fancy in Kentucky and Georgia represents a dollar Democrats choose not to use defending Mark Pryor in Arkansas, Kay Hagan in North Carolina, Mary Landrieu in Louisiana, and Mark Begich in Alaska, so we hope Democrats keep channeling Captain Ahab and chasing their white whales,” Dayspring said.
