On November 9, 2012, I included a female Hound mix in the morning email. Then known as “28406,” and in the loving custody of the Gwinnett County Animal Shelter. Twelve years later she sits at my feet and answers to “Dolly.” Sometimes. It’s short for “Dahlonega,” and she’s been one of the great blessings of my life. She was a great friend and protector to Roxy, who at the time was old, infirm, and blind. Today, Dolly has kidney disease and is blind herself.
Dolly inspired the legislation that passed in 2016 naming “The Adoptable Dog” as the Official State Dog of Georgia.
She was a steadfast companion to Mrs. GaPundit, comforting her in her protracted illness, and Dolly helped me keep going in the early days of grieving the loss of my wife. Maybe one day, a legislator or someone in the Executive Branch will offer a Proclamation stating what I already know. Dolly is a Damn Good Dog.
