Savannah is a fine place to be for those looking to soak up living history, but even here it’s rare to get a history lesson at 1,500 feet above ground.

On Saturday and Sunday, folks looking to do just that can purchase a ride on the Movie Memphis Belle, a B-17 Flying Fortress that will be soaring above Savannah.

“This is the only F-model B-17 flyable,” said Ron Gause, an Air Force veteran who has been flying the plane since 2005.

“It is a joy to fly,” he said. “It’s also an honor and a privilege to fly. There are only 11 flyable B-17s on the North American continent. Not many people get to fly one.”

Not too many people get to ride in one, either. Those who can’t shell out $450 for the 30-minute flight can still take free ground tours of the well-kept aircraft, according to the Liberty Foundation, the nonprofit flying museum that operates the plane.
