The deadline to appeal property tax assessments came and went last Monday. By Friday afternoon, Douglas County Chief Appraiser Benny Waldrop had a pretty good idea of how many appeals he’s looking at for the 2013 tax year.
Waldrop said his office received right at 3,200 appeals and may get a few more trickling in through the mail that will be accepted as long as they were postmarked by July 29.
Waldrop said the number of appeals this year is down from about 4,100 last year and 4,800 in 2011, even in the wake of a property tax increase approved by the Board of Commissioners two weeks ago.
Waldrop said the drop in appeals could be caused by a number of factors.
“I think in some instances folks were pretty much satisfied with their values,” said Waldrop. “We had been lowering values for the last few years, and I think some people feel like we’ve lowered them enough. Of course, those that appeal for the most part feel like it’s too high.”
