The transformation of downtown Savannah into a fictional beach town, Salty Shoals, for “SpongeBob Squarepants 2” was evident Wednesday as the cameras rolled during the first day of shooting in the city.

Classic cars and vendor carts brimming with beach trinkets lined the front of the Savannah College of Art and Design’s Jen Library, which had been converted into a sea museum for the movie. The street signs at the corner of Broughton and Abercorn had been replaced with signs dubbing the streets Breezy and Port, where actor Antonio Banderas was filmed on a pirate ship with wheels.

Dozens of film crew kept busy directing extras, putting set pieces in place and, with the assistance of off-duty Savannah-Chatham police officers, making sure pedestrians such as Adam and Lanna Johnson did not wander onto the set while filming was taking place. Visiting from Anderson, S.C., the couple was stopped on Congress Street while Banderas finished his shot, but said they weren’t bothered by the filming during their stay.

“It’s a plus,” Lanna Johnson said.

While many were satisfied to see Banderas in person, some younger SpongeBob fans were hoping to catch a glimpse of the animated star. Nikki Lee said she had to explain to her 3-year-old son and friend’s 4-year-old daughter that a SpongeBob sighting was not likely.
