Senate candidate Nunn brings campaign to Athens | Online Athens

U.S. Senate candidate Michelle Nunn brought her campaign to Athens on Wednesday, hammering nails and sawing boards at a Habitat for Humanity construction project in the morning before a series of meetings with potential Athens-area supporters, volunteers and donors in the afternoon.

Nunn has stopped in many of the state’s major cities over the past several days on what her campaign calls the “What Washington Can Learn from Georgia” tour.

Accompanied by husband Ron and children Vinson, 10, and Elizabeth, 8, who don’t start school until next week, she’s traveled to Augusta, Macon, Valdosta, Albany and Columbus, working briefly at each stop with volunteers doing things like packing back-to-school bags for neglected or abused children.

Nunn is the Democratic front-runner since announcing her candidacy July 22. Daughter of former Georgia U.S. Sen. Sam Nunn, Michelle Nunn is running in a state that’s voted heavily Republican in recent elections. But one early poll has her running close with or ahead of likely Republican candidates to replace Sen. Saxby Chambliss, who’s retiring after next year.
