Nothing was going to stop Sharon Edwards of Atlanta from retrieving the car she abandoned Tuesday night when icy conditions made it impossible for her to drive.

“I hopped in somebody’s car, and they brought me,” she said Thursday morning outside the Westlake MARTA station parking area, one of two spots where stranded motorists flocked to get their vehicles back.

People who left their vehicles on I-20 and I-285 west went to Westlake, and those who left their vehicles on I-75, the top end of I-285 and the Downtown Connector (I-75/I-85) were told to go to Mount Paran Church. Officials from the National Guard, Georgia Forestry, Georgia State Patrol and the Georgia Department of Transportation’s HERO Unit were on hand at both locations Thursday to refill gas tanks and provide jumps to cars with dead batteries.

“The effort is to get as many of those cars off the side of the road today,” said Crystal Paulk-Buchanan with the Georgia Emergency Management Agency. “There are none in the travel lanes. They are on the shoulders. They are against the barrier walls. They are in the grassy medians. For safety’s sake, we need to get them out of the road.”

The Georgia State Patrol found about 2,029 vehicles were left on metro Atlanta interstates after Tuesday’s snowstorm brought the area to a standstill.
