There have been 12 sons of Savannah who have served in the U.S. Senate since the First Congress convened on March 4, 1769. They were born here or moved here to begin the political lives that led them ultimately to the Senate.

Kingston, the Savannah Republican congressman seeking to succeed retiring U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss, would like to be the 13th U.S. Senator from Savannah and the first in more than 136 years.

That’s quite a slump, especially when you consider Savannah and Chatham County dominated the early Georgia senatorial pipeline, sending six of their citizens to Washington to serve seven of the state’s first 10 Senate terms before the Senate was a quarter-century old.

Overall, Georgia has sent 59 men and one woman to the U.S. Senate, starting with William Few in 1769 and rolling through Johnny Isakson in 2005.
