A self-proclaimed history lover is seeking the support of the Savannah City Council to renovate and convert two historic former school buildings into 57 low-income apartments for seniors.

Bill Gross is proposing to have his Kingsland-based company, W.H. Gross Construction, construct 25 apartments in the former school buildings on the east side of Waters Avenue between Anderson and Henry streets, in addition to 32 units in a new building on the northern side of the vacant lot.

On Thursday, City Council will consider supporting a zoning amendment and a resolution in support of the company’s low income housing tax credit application to the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.

Those credits will help cover the high costs of rehabilitation and cleanup, including asbestos abatement, which have been deal breakers for previous parties interested in the property, Gross said.
