RN-T.com – Trial of former chief magistrate Chris Mathis begins

Attorneys in the theft and fraud case of former Chief Magistrate Chris Mathis on Monday painted different pictures of the man accused of a Ponzi-like cattle scheme, setting the stage on its first day for a potentially weeklong trial.

Mathis, 48, is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from several people under the guise of cattle investments. He faces 52 charges, which include multiple counts of theft by taking, theft by conversion and deposit account fraud.

The trial resumes at 8:30 a.m. today in Floyd County Superior Court.

In custody since August, Mathis entered the courtroom Monday afternoon in a wheelchair. He then stood up on his own, walked to his seat and sat down.

District Attorney Leigh Patterson told jurors that Mathis solicited people for money to buy cattle as an investment. However, the money instead went to previous investors who expected their money plus a profit.
