A possible 2-percent increase in Rome’s hotel/motel tax that could be used to maintain a proposed tennis center would raise the tax to 8 percent — a rate matched by a number of nearby cities and counties.
Rome officials have floated the idea of raising the hotel/motel tax to help pay for the maintenance and operations of the $11.4 million, 72-court facility in the proposed special purpose, local option sales tax package. No decision has been made, and it’s possible no increase would occur.
However, the 2-percent increase is proposed in a formal plan for funding the maintenance and operations of the project that would be built near Mount Berry Square mall if voters approve the SPLOST package in November.
If Rome raises its hotel/motel tax to 8 percent, it would match the rate of a number of nearby areas.
Bartow County, Cedartown, Dalton and Chattanooga all have a hotel/motel tax of 8 percent.
Cave Spring and Calhoun have rates of 5 percent. Cartersville and Ringgold’s rate is 6 percent, according to the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.
“I don’t think it’s hurting Bartow County,” City Manager John Bennett said of the 8 percent rate. “I don’t think it’s hurting Chattanooga.”
