The number of first-time unemployment claims from June to July jumped across the Coosa Valley region and in Floyd County, according to numbers releases Thursday by the Georgia Department of Labor.

In most cases however, those claims were well below the number of claims filed in July 2012.

First-time claims in Floyd County jumped from 478 in June to 899 in July, but the July 2012 first-time claims totaled 1012.

Floyd County also saw a decrease in the number of people working. Some 38,600 people were employed in June, but that number decreased to 38,400 in July, according to DOL statistics. In July 2012, 38,300 were employed in Floyd County.

Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased to 8.8 percent in July.
