As the 13-year-old Operation Enduring Freedom winds toward its final weeks, the commanding general of the 3rd Infantry Division is prepared to deploy a portion of his Fort Stewart-based headquarters to Afghanistan.

Maj. Gen. Mike Murray will lead about 200 3rd ID soldiers to the Middle East — the majority to Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan with small groups going to Kuwait and Qatar — where they will join a contingent of about 60 Marne Division soldiers already operating downrange.
