Bob Barr, running to reclaim a seat in Congress, pointed Saturday to what he said was one of his greatest assets: experience.

It’s that eight years of experience in Congress that Barr said would help him curtail what he called the arrogance of the current administration in Washington, D.C.

“It is a systemic danger,” Barr told members of the Floyd County Republican Party. “They are indeed changing the country from what we know and love and what it should be — a country run by the people.”

The former Georgia congressman and Libertarian presidential contender is a congressional candidate for the 11th District, which is composed of Bartow and Cherokee counties as well as areas stretching inside Atlanta’s perimeter. Speaking Saturday to Floyd County Republicans, Barr said he and his wife consider themselves honorary citizens of the Rome area.

The district seat Barr seeks now doesn’t include Floyd County, but he once represented the area and said Congress members affect people across the state regardless of their districts.

Barr said he wanted to return to the House of Representatives, where he served the former 7th District from 1995 to 2003, and not seek the Senate seat being vacated by Saxby Chambliss.

“That’s where my heart is,” Barr said. “The Senate is where the talk is. The House is where the action is.”

Barr said his experience would help. He’s spoken with Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor, and been assured he’ll have seniority upon his return.

“When I return to the House, I will do so with eight years’ seniority,” Barr said. “I will do so as a veteran member of Congress, not a freshman.”

Three other Republicans are running: state Reps. Barry Loudermilk and Ed Lindsey and businesswoman Tricia Pridemore. The seat is being vacated by U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey, R-Marietta.
