Renee McDowell wins Grovetown race | The Augusta Chronicle

Grovetown residents elected a city native to the City Council.

Renee McDowell will fill the unexpired term of Councilman Dale Stoddard, who died June 16. The term expires at the end of 2015.

“Now that that (campaigning) part is over with, we can get to the part that I’m really excited about,” McDowell said. “I love the people, I love the community. I guess it’s humbling.”

McDowell got 760 votes, 51.39 percent of the total, against Eric Blair, a relative newcomer, Army veteran and Fort Gordon network engineer, who got 390 votes, or 26.37 percent, and David Payne Jr., a former city employee and landscaper and remodeler, who received 308 votes, or 20.82 percent.

McDowell, who runs Georgia Detention Services, is wife of former Councilman Sonny McDowell.
