Reichert plans meeting on Payne City’s future | Politics | Macon.com

Macon Mayor Robert Reichert is planning a town hall meeting — for a different town.

Reichert, the Macon-Bibb County mayor-elect, is scheduled to speak and listen in Payne City’s Town Hall at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Reichert told legislators last month that he wanted the meeting to talk with Payne City citizens about the future of the community. Payne City, originally a mill town, has roughly 200 residents, or about 0.1 percent of the total population of Bibb County. Because Payne City residents voted 9-to-7 against consolidation with the Macon and Bibb County governments, the community was not combined.

Residents, many of whom rent property in the small community off Vineville Avenue, can vote only for Macon-Bibb County mayor, but not for a district-level county commissioner. Reichert told legislators he’s interested in the idea of having Payne City give up its charter to become an unincorporated community that could become a designated historic district.
