Qualifying for city elections starts Monday | Douglas County Sentinel

Qualifying for the Nov. 5 municipal general election in Douglasville will be held Monday through Friday at City Hall on Church Street.

Qualifying hours will be from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4:30 p.m. each day for candidates who want to get their names on the municipal election ballots.

The city council seats up for election are Ward 1, Ward 2 (Post 1) and Ward 3 (posts 1 and 2). The current council members in those seats seeking re-election are Mayor Pro Tem Larry Yockey (Ward 1), Councilman Dennis McLain (Ward 2, Post 1), Councilwoman LaShun Burr Danley (Ward 3, Post 1) and Councilman Samuel Davis (Ward 3, Post 2). All of the council members up for election this year have confirmed their intentions to seek re-election.

So far, two other candidates have announced their intent to run for a council seat. Former Douglasville Police Detective Jay Smith and local attorney Mike Miller have formally filed a Declaration of Intent to enter the city council race through the Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission.

Smith filed his DOI on Aug. 5 for the seat currently held by Yockey. Miller, who is also a former Douglas County School Board member and state representative candidate, filed his DOI on Aug. 8 for the seat currently held by McLain.

To qualify, potential candidates must pay a $180 qualifying fee and submit a candidacy affidavit. All candidates need to bring with them to City Hall for qualifying is their ID and payment for the qualifying fee, according to City Clerk Joyce Stone. Once there, they will sign an affidavit that includes their name, birth date and address information.

“We go by their sworn affidavit,” Stone said. “We don’t really have to have any (additional) documents.”

Candidates must be 21-years-old, live within the city limits for at least 12 months prior to the date of election and reside in the ward for which they’re running. They must also be registered and qualified voters.
