Macon-Bibb to seek opinion on possible property tax hike | Politics | Macon.com

Macon-Bibb County commissioners voted Tuesday to call for a non-binding referendum on a special 1-mill property tax hike to permanently fund several services that caused controversy in this year’s budget debate.

A resolution from the mayor’s office asks the Georgia General Assembly to allow a public vote in Macon-Bibb County next year on a special tax to fund the arts and museums; economic development; payments to the Medical Center, Navicent Health, to help cover health care for the indigent; and the Macon Transit Authority’s paratransit service.

The referendum, if held, wouldn’t have any legal force, but it would tell commissioners whether residents support the idea.
