ATLANTA — After an outbreak of synthetic marijuana-related illnesses in south Georgia, a state lawmaker told Channel 2 Action news the current law is not sufficient to stop the sale of the dangerous and potentially lethal drug that he describes as an epidemic.
“We have for the past three years, passed laws that we felt like were going to stop this kind of thing. Unfortunately what we are doing is just not working. We really have to be creative and think outside the box,” said state Sen. Buddy Carter.
Carter, a Republican from Pooler, is running for Congress. He said new variations of the drug that sent over a dozen young people to emergency rooms in Brunswick in recent weeks is evidence that manufacturers continue to outwit law enforcement by selling drugs that while technically legal, are extremely dangerous and unpredictable.
“It’s a tragic situation down there. Obviously we have to identify the chemical compounds and outlaw them and will continue to do that. But we are going to have to come up with some innovate ways to attack this as well,” Carter said.
