There are two things you might not know about Kasim Reed, but should: a) the mayor of Atlanta is a boxing fan, and b) he learned the art of politics in the state Capitol, where rabbit punches and sharp elbows were part of the daily routine.
In the midst of a re-election campaign, but lacking any formidable opposition, Reed has settled on Fulton County as a sparring partner. This week, the mayor accused the county of operating a “turnstile” court system in which law enforcement becomes a futile game of catch and release.
There are two things you might not know about Commission Chairman John Eaves, but should: a) he is part-time, and has a day job in corporate training; and b) he spent seven years with the U.S. Peace Corps as its southeast director.
Eaves is anything but a pugilist, in a job that’s getting more hard-knuckled by the day. The soft-spoken county chairman finds himself bewildered by what the mayor of Atlanta is saying.
“He’s very politically astute. I’m not sure what his strategy is here,” Eaves said Friday. “I certainly feel conversation and collaboration and working together is a much better alternative to follow, in terms of addressing whatever the issues are that need to be addressed.”
