GRAY — Jones County commissioners voted Monday to keep the county’s millage rate the same as last year’s.

About 70 residents who attended a called meeting were expecting commissioners to increase the rate by 3 to 4 mills.

Commissioner Daylon Martin said those projections were “exaggerated,” adding that the board was primed to raise the millage rate by 1 1/2 mills.

Asked why commissioners decided not to bump up the rate, Martin said, “constituent presence.”

The big turnout forced commissioners to find other ways to make up for a budget shortfall.

The largest item commissioners were struggling to buy was more than $400,000 for updated equipment for the county’s firefighters and emergency personnel.
