The Georgia Supreme Court has voted unanimously to disbar Atlanta City Council member H. Lamar Willis, saying he pocketed $30,000 in settlement funds meant for a personal injury client. Even after being ordered by the trial court to distribute the funds, the high court said, Willis failed to do so, compounding the matter by failing to respond to the State Bar of Georgia’s formal complaint.
The defendant in the personal injury case had to pay the plaintiff twice and seek reimbursement from Willis, who has not paid the funds back, the justices said.
Willis, who represents Atlanta City Council District 3-At Large, is running for reelection this year. A statement by him issued by his campagn blamed “tremendous personal challenges” two years ago for “a grievous professional error.”
“I acknowledge it, apologize for it, and I accept the repercussions of it,” Willis said. “The defendants have been repaid contrary to the language in the Court’s opinion.”
