SNELLVILLE — Gwinnett’s district attorney is looking into claims that Snellville Mayor Kelly Kautz used public funds for personal gain.

Kenneth Stepp with Gwinnett Ethics met with an assistant district attorney for an hour Wednesday, after submitting a complaint.

“Based on our findings, we believe that Kelly Kautz unquestionably violated the city charter and committed both civil and criminal offenses in an effort to personally benefit from her position,” a press release from Gwinnett Ethics said. “The most egregious issue is her use of public funds for personal gain.”

One allegation involved Snellville’s revolving door city attorney issue, in which Kautz and the City Council have publicly disagreed on an attorney and payment for months.

District Attorney Danny Porter said he will look into whether Kautz directed the city attorney on a First Amendment case to also help her personally, according to a statement in an email that she faced disbarrment for turning off a mike while a resident was speaking.

Porter said he was unsure if an allegation that the city paid for Kautz’s Leadership Gwinnett training is illegal.
