Gainesville businesses eye sale of growlers

When Gainesville amended its alcohol ordinance a few months ago to allow the sale of growlers, a few local business owners saw an opportunity to catch the wave.

“We kind of fell into the popularity craze …” said Zack Thompson, co-owner of Pro Touch Landscapes.

The retail division of the company, known as Pro Outdoor Living, is at 1850 Thompson Bridge Road and sells everything from fertilizer and plants to grills and barbecue rubs.

Thompson and his business partners are now on their way to becoming the first to sell growlers in Gainesville after City Council on Tuesday approved an alcohol license for the company.

Tap It Gainesville Growlers, the trade name of the new business that will operate about 600 square feet of space within the retail store, will serve craft beer from microbreweries straight from the tap and sealed in glass jars (called growlers) ready-made to take home.
