ATLANTA | The 10 declared candidates for state superintendent of schools reported raising nearly $400,000 collectively, but only four brought in more than $10,000.
Leading the pack is Republican Fitz Johnson with $265,000, including $147,000 he lent the campaign. He has $238,000 in cash on hand, more than the other nine candidates put together.
Next is Rep. Alisha Morgan, a Democrat, with $78,600. Republican Nancy Jester raised $22,500.
Two previous candidates for the post are in the middle of the bunch. Kira Willis, who is running as a Republican this time after losing four years ago as a Libertarian, reported raising $21,000, including her loan of $18,000. Republican Richard Woods has raised $8,000 so far.
Also reporting were Matt Shultz, $2,650; Doeford Garfield Shirley, $330; and no contributions reported for Sharyl Dawes, Billy Woods and Mary Kay Bacallao.

What is wrong with these candidates? Do they not know how to do the math? The job pays little over $100k and no one see any red flags when there are candidates that raised over the yearly allotted salary and some close to it? Is it a public servant position or a step up to be a politician later? From Kathy Cox who plays on a game show to win a million dollar who refused to pay off her debts and files for bankruptcy to John Barge who just made over half a turn and now running for governor. And these people who are asking for all this money out of tax payers’ pockets want to go in the school system to do what-balance the budget? Tax payers should be more concerned that some candidates are trying to raise so much money than weak on fundraising.
