ALBANY, GA (WALB) – State water experts say Southwest Georgia agriculture could be the target in Florida’s announced Supreme Court lawsuit against Georgia, and could force Georgia farmers to cut back on their water usage and number of acres planted.
In an August 13th hearing of the U.S. Senate’s Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, attended by both of Florida’s Senators, a Florida scientist said South Georgia farmers irrigation pivots are siphoning off huge amounts of water from the Flint River basin, leaving little for Florida’s Apalachicola Bay and it’s oyster industry.
Georgia Water Planning and Policy Center says Georgia agriculture could be forced by the Supreme Court to use less irrigation.
