A key international representative from the Metro Atlanta Chamber is gearing up for an India visit to court potential investors in biotechnology and other strategic sectors. Jorge Fernandez, the chamber’s vice president of global commerce, will leave July 26 on a two-week trade mission, his second visit to the country in as many years.
The trip is part of the chamber’s ongoing efforts to position metro Atlanta as a destination for Indian companies, particularly life sciences firms that pull talent from local institutions like Emory University and create high-paying jobs for the region.
The sector has been a focus since Georgia hosted the biotechnology industry’s largest annual convention in 2009. It intensified last year with the announcement that pharma giant Baxter International would invest more than $1 billion in a new plant in Covington, Ga.
In years past, communities and institutions affiliated with the Innovation Crescent Regional Partnership, a joint marketing effort highlighting the life sciences assets of the area stretching from Atlanta to Athens, has traveled together to India.
