Georgia officials breathed a sigh of relief this week as they got word that federal air-traffic controllers won’t be removed from towers at airports in Athens, Albany and Macon in June as had been planned.

The Federal Aviation Administration had announced it would close 149 towers across the country at airports with the least commercial traffic because of the budget sequestration.

But on May 10, outgoing Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced that the closures of “low activity” towers were no longer necessary.
