BRUNSWICK | Emmitt Nolan will be sworn into the City Commission and begin campaigning for his next term almost simultaneously.

The 37-year-old property appraiser for Glynn County was appointed by Gov. Nathan Deal Wednesday to fill the unexpired term of James Brooks. Brooks, who faces racketeering charges in Camden County based on accusations he peddled his influence as a Brunswick city commission, was suspended by Deal on April 29. Brooks’ term expires Dec. 31.

Qualifying for the fall election begins in August. Nolan said he will be sworn into office no later than the commission’s meeting on August 7.

“The governor’s office is trying to work it out with a judge to get me sworn in before the meeting,” he said.

He could be facing Brooks, who said previously that he would run in the fall re-election for the South Ward seat. If he is convicted, however, he would not be able to run and his temporary suspension would become permanent.
