DA: Sheriff’s office, GBI jointly investigating BGR audit – The Cherokee Ledger-News: Top Stories

Law enforcement agencies have become involved in an investigation of the Ball Ground Recycling forensic audit, a step Cherokee County District Attorney Shannon Wallace previously said she would take if the audit reported criminal activity.

Wallace confirmed to the Ledger-News last week that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Cherokee Sheriff’s Office jointly are investigating the results of the $500,000 forensic audit performed on details surrounding the Ball Ground Recycling deal the county made in 2006 and 2007 with private businessmen, to determine if there were any criminal violations associated with the situation.

“I saw some things within the audit that I asked for a criminal investigation to be conducted on,” Wallace said Dec. 11. “That’s where we are.”

It was determined in April that the audit, conducted by McClendon and Associates, would not be delivered to the county commission and made public upon completion; instead it would be delivered to Wallace. This step ensures the county commission does not have control of the audit and so that any prosecution Wallace wishes to undertake will not be compromised by the release of information contained in the audit. Wallace will release the forensic audit at her discretion, or as soon as her investigation is complete.
