A measure allowing the Augusta Commission to vote to waive the city’s conflict of interest policy and allow commissioners to do business with the city will get further study after a 9-1 vote Tuesday.

Commissioner Mary Davis, the sole “no” vote, said she didn’t think the conflict ordinance needed further study after a commission committee last year spent several months reviewing it and adding “teeth,” such as the prohibition against commissioners doing business with the city and investigative procedures when a conflict is alleged.

“Now, we’re going to bounce it around in committee,” Davis said.

Last year, the commission voted to censure three of its own for doing work as contractors or subcontractors on city projects, including plumbing, locksmith and flooring work. The effort to tighten the city’s conflict of interest ordinance was led by former commissioner Donnie Smith.
