Cherokee Tribune – Businessman seeks Geist’s seat on Cherokee Board of Education

A Woodstock man has announced plans to run for the Cherokee County Board of Education District 3 seat now held by board member Michael Geist.

John Harmon announced his candidacy Thursday for the May 20 Republican primary and November general election.

The candidate said in making the announcement he looks forward to sharing his entrepreneurial experience with the board in his goal of “focusing on what counts, the children.”

“The focus should be on the children first. I think the board needs to be better in the ability to work together to solve any and all issues,” Harmon said Thursday. “I decided to run because I want to continue to be involved in my children’s future and the future of all the children in the county.”

Harmon has owned and operated his own business, H and J Foods LLC, for eight years.

As a business owner, Harmon said he will bring his business experience and knowledge to his role as a member of the Board of Education.

He said he understands budgets and audit reports, and he intends to work with the entire board and superintendent in achieving common fiduciary goals.

“I run several restaurants, so the personnel experience to talk with people, deal with people, is important. Running your own business, you have to pay attention to detail, deal with budgets, and conflict,” Harmon said.

Harmon has lived in the county 10 years. He said he is actively involved in the community, especially at Hickory Flat Elementary, where his children attend.
