Scratch another name off the list of potential mayoral candidates in 2014.
State Rep. Richard Smith, an unsuccessful candidate for mayor against Bob Poydasheff in 2002, said he has been approached about a run, but is not interested.
Smith, a Columbus Republican whose House district includes portions of Muscogee and Harris counties, said it was flattering, but it ain’t going to happen.
“Once you get elected to the General Assembly, you are one of 180,” Smith said this week. “I have been there nine years, and I think my best years and most productive years are ahead of me.”
Smith did say whoever is thinking about challenging Mayor Teresa Tomlinson next year better plan to raise a lot of money. Tomlinson has already put more than $70,000 in the bank a year out.
“I think it is going to take $250,000 to $300,000 to run,” Smith said.
When he ran 11 years ago, he spent a little more than $100,000.
