Catoosa County adopts budget and a 5 percent property tax increase – : News

Following two public hearings and two budget workshops last month, Catoosa County commissioners trimmed an additional $300,000 from next year’s budget.

Rather than paying $30 more each year in property taxes — what someone with a home valued at $120,000 would have paid in the original proposal — property owners now will see an increase of roughly $11 in the budget adopted Tuesday, Sept. 2.

Even though the initially proposed increase was more than halved, several citizens at-tending the Tuesday morning county Board of Commissioners meeting expressed their opin-ion that no tax increase is good.

Saying the proposed budget was unacceptable, Patricia Mahoney said the budget, even as modified, was unacceptable. She recounted her family’s recent financial setbacks and asked that more and deeper cuts be made to expenditures for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1.
